Woolly Bear, founded in 2019, was born out of a passion for art, culture, and family heritage. Originally known as HawkMoth Bead Co., the brand was created by self-taught artists Mike and Eden, who were motivated by a desire to teach their children the value of art, music, and traditional culture. As Filipino/Syilx/Canadian parents, they wanted to instill these traditional skills and knowledge in their children, ensuring they remained connected to their roots.

Our workshop is located in the stunning Westbank, BC, on Tsinstikeptum IR 9, nestled along the Boucherie Wine Trail of Canada. The breathtaking landscapes and cultural landmarks of the Okanagan have long inspired many of our wearable art designs, bringing a unique blend of nature and culture to each piece.

The decision to rebrand as Woolly Bear came as a natural evolution of our journey. The name was inspired by the Woolly Bear caterpillar, which Eden adored as a child. After a serendipitous moment when Eden’s husband discovered a hibernating Woolly Bear caterpillar just days after the rebrand, we felt this was a sign that we were on the right path. In the weeks that followed, the caterpillar cocooned and eventually transformed into an Isabella Tiger Moth—an emblem of growth and transformation, much like the brand itself.

As Woolly Bear continues to grow and evolve, we want to clarify that while the company is Indigenous, Eden, the primary artist, is a proud Filipino/Canadian. As the face of our social media and public presence, Eden feels it is important to address that while it may be easy to assume a connection to Indigenous beadwork, our creations are deeply influenced by a rich and diverse cultural family heritage. Eden is assisted by two very talented and skilled makers—her mother, Lynn, and her cousin, Salina—whose contributions are integral to the heart of Woolly Bear.

Woolly Bear is a women-led, family-owned, and locally owned business, committed to supporting our community. We appreciate your interest and support as we continue on this journey together.
